Good vs. Evil In The Scarlet Letter

In the novel “ The Scarlet Letter”, by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester is seduced by Reverend Dimmingsdale, which created good and evil characteristics in the novel and lead to multiple conflicts portraying Roger Chillingworth and Reverend Dimmingsdale as both good and evil personalities.

Reverend Dimmingsdale is a father of Pearl, lover of Hester and an adulteress. He displays both good and evil in several ways. His good characteristics out number the evil. Towns people describe Dimmingsdale as a “God Fearing” Gentleman, “But merciful overmuch” p.49. The Puritan society still respected Reverend Dimmingsdale after his confession; the society states “ never had a man spoken in so wise, so high, and so holy spirit, as he that spake this day” p.243.
