Golding and Hopkins' view of Man Vs Nature

Golding and Hopkins both show their low opinions of man in ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘God’s Grandeur.’ Both authors comment on man’s destructive nature and disregard for authority. Golding and Hopkins also comment on the beauty of nature and how changing the natural pattern of events and not going by the rules can destroy it.

In ‘Lord of the Flies,’ Golding comments on how the disregard of authority can lead to destruction. In the start of the novel when the children realise that there was no longer an authority figure for them to look up to, they were essentially required to work together. However, they started to lose their innocence and turn against each other, and did eventually resort to violence.
Ralph quotes, “Jack! Jack!…your breaking the rules!…the rules are the only thing we’ve got.” This quote shows how Ralph is depending on there being authority and power, and he believes that things will be more easily run with rules in place.
