Giuseppe Mazzini

Giuseppe Mazzini, born in 1805, was an Italian patriot and revolutionist, a leading figure in the Risorgimento. A supporter of Italian unity under a republican government, he wrote revolutionary propaganda from exile in London after 1837. He believed that unity should be achieved by revolution and war based on direct popular action. His influence on Italian liberals was enormous, and his literary style is remarkably fine. He returned to Italy during the Revolutions of 1848 and took part in the Roman republic of 1849. He organized unsuccessful uprisings in Milan in 1853 and in Southern Italy in 1857.
