George Simpson

Sir George Simpson, governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada from 1821 to 1860. He was a traditional businessman, who set aside his personal life to contribute to the Hudson’s Bay Company. Simpson would travel tirelessly across the continent of North America on canoe and horseback to ensure all trading posts were operating the way he wanted. Rather than sitting in his office, Simpson was active in protecting the good relationships between his men and the Métis and the Natives. He encouraged Country Marriages, relationships between fur traders and Native women. He was involved with quite a few relationships with First Nations women.
