“How could you??!” Anna sobbed. She was completely agitated with worry, grief and frustration. Despite so many promises, Fridli had returned from another night at the pub. He had promised not to go again, but why had she believed him yet again? Anna felt helpless, she was only the wife, and she was forced to abide by her husband’s wishes. Furthermore, she loved the untamed man standing there. Despite that love, more than once, she wished her parents had selected a more upstanding and loyal match for her. She understood why she wasn’t the most desirable of wives herself, but still...Did her past sins have to be atoned for on such a scale? It was hard enough to deal with all of Fridli’s drinking, gambling and pub crawling.
