The book ‚Fat Chance’ is about a girl, Judith Liebowitz, who is 14 years old and lives with her Mum in a flat. Her father died in a car crash by a drunk driver when she was a baby. Her best friend Monica just lives 2 houses down from her.

One day in school the whole class get diarys from their english teacher to write in. She said that everyone who wants to be a writer has to sudy his/her own life. Judi doesn’t know what to become but her goal is to find it out by the end of the year, to have a boyfriend and to lose weight. Those are her three main interrests. Judi soon starts a diet but dosn’t have enough willpower to keep up with it. She cannot controll herself and never stops eating, so she puts on weight every week. She is also under pressure because she admires and envys a girl of her class, Nancy Pratt, who is very good looking, thin as a stick and who always wears fancy clothes.
