Do Advertisers Infringe on the Freedom of the Press?
Do advertisers infringe on the freedom of the press? I don’t think that is the real question that needs be asked; because, of course advertisers infringe upon freedom of the press if allowed. Just as politicians, and anybody else does or would if allowed to. The real questions are first, how can publishers can and editors keep editorial control while staying commercially viable? Second, how can readers know what they are getting as news is not in fact an advertorial? I have discovered that not only are advertisers influencing control over magazines, likewise they are influencing control over web publishing, newspapers, and even supposedly public shows of produces such as electronic expos’. Below are a few examples I found showing some of the ways advertisers influence and even control the press they receive.
