Free Airtime, A Step in the Right Direction

“In our democracy, speech is free but communication is expensive-and never more so than during campaign season (Taylor/Ornstein pg. 2).” In today’s day and age if you can’t afford the dominant communication mediums, it is almost impossible to be heard. A voiceless candidate is almost guaranteed a loss. The proposal for free airtime targets many problems with the campaign process. Free airtime will open up the political process to more candidates. It will provide citizens with more choices, more information, and more power. These changes demand our politics be more equitable, affordable, interesting, and issue based. A system of free airtime would make politics more open and money less dominant. Free airtime would help create a stronger democracy.
