Fragile X Syndrome is the most common form of inherited mental retardation in the world today. It is a genetic disease which affects approximately 1 in 2500 females, and an astonishing 1 in 1250 males worldwide (Hagerman, 2001, p. 867). What is worse is that Fragile X syndrome is a very unpredictable and unpreventable disorder which not only touches those who suffer from it, but those around them as well. It’s affect, is sometimes devastating. To date, there is no cure for Fragile X Syndrome, and this disease continues to plague the lives of thousands of people across the world. Fragile X Syndrome is a well known disease, and a very important genetic disorder to investigate.
