Force on a Sluice Gate

Theory

The control volume was determined to begin just before the gate, where the flow was constant, and end just after the gate where the flow was constant. The Continuity Principle was first used to derive an equation for the velocity up stream V! and the velocity downstream V2 in terms of ideal flow rate QI, depth upsteam y1, depth downstream y2, and channel width B.

Next Bernoulli’s Principle was used to derive an equation for QI in terms of y1, y2, and B.

The Momentum Principles were then used to derive an equation for force F on the gate in terms of y1, y2, B, and actual flow rate QA.

Equations for the total head upstream TH1 and total head down stream TH2 were also derived.
