Chapter 14



14-1 Exterior wood-frame walls are generally drawn 6” thick at a ¼” = 1’-0” (1:50 metric) scale for manual drafting or 5” for CADD.

14-2 Interior walls, known as partitions, are frequently drawn 4” (100 mm) thick.

14-3 Exterior doors are drawn on the floor plan with the sill shown on the outside of the house. The interior door symbol is drawn without a sill.

14-4 A) Bedroom closets: 24” minimum depth. Closets and wardrobes: Depending on the size of the closet and wardrobe and the type of the door used.
B) Water Closet Space: 30” wide; 24” clearance in front.
C) Stair width: 36” but more, such as 48” to 60”, is preferred if space is available.
D) Fireplace hearth depth: 18”- 24” depending on the fireplace opening width.

14-8 Guardrails are used for safety at balconies, lofts, stairs, and decks over 30” above...
