1) Loung feels she is middle class because she lives on an above ground apartment, and tells us that the higher above the ground you live the wealthier you are as, if you live on the ground floor the dirt gets inside. Many of Loung's friends live in only 3 or 4 bedroom homes for a family of 10. Loung also has a flushing toilet, iron bathtub and running water in her apartment. In the story Loung tells us that, aside from money and possessions, middle-class families have a lot more leisure time. Loungs family are fortunate enough to have a maid that comes everyday to do the laundry, cooking and cleaning while Loungs Pa is at work. Loung knows that she is not poor as on her walks to school she notices children her age selling trinkets, they are not fortunate enough attend school.
