Filming Techniques Used In The Truman Show

The Truman Show is a movie based on the making of a reality TV sitcom and its effects it has on its star. Throughout the movie we find the director and editor have used camera effects to manipulate us into thinking we are watching clips from the “real” Truman Show. In this essay I wish to analyse how and when they used and the effects they have on me the viewer. I would also like to discuss the significance of the characters, clothing and sets.

The beginning of the film we meet Christof, the director of The Truman Show, who is explaining his feelings on show. His words seem to be sincere and trustworthy but we, the audience, find that this character does not seem quite worthy that trust. The lighting used by Weir (the director) induces this feeling of untrustworthiness upon us. This is done by lighting the character from the side, which immediately causes a feeling of distrust.
