Famous American Animator Walter Lantz

He is the brain behind such characters as Woody Woodpecker and Chilly Willy. Walter Lantz was born April 27, 1900, in New Rochelle, New York. He was the son of Italian immigrants, and was born Walter Lanza, having his name changed at Ellis Island. His mother died while giving birth to his brother, and his father was an invalid, so Walter had to support his family at a young age. It was while working as an auto mechanic that Lantz got his first break in the art world at the age of 15.

Fred Kafka, a wealthy customer, saw his drawings on the garage's bulletin board. He enjoyed them so much he bankrolled Walter's studies at the New York City's Art Students League. Kafka also helped...
