Was Mme Beigne responsible for son’s actions?

From the very beginning Mme Beigne showed a lack of concern for Lucas’s outside activities. She always seemed too pre-occupied with her own life and her own problems to involve herself with Lucas. Although she did issue a few vague warnings throughout, she was very much lost inside her own world. The surfacing of other issues certainly did not help with her interaction with her son. The fear associated with the burglary continued to plague her mind, but most defining was the contradictions in her father’s history that ultimately absorbed all her time. Consequently, with these issues surrounding Mme Beigne’s mind, there would be no time left for the ever lonely Lucas.

Throughout the summer, Mme Beigne is only concerned with herself and the problems in which she has encountered. She is self-absorbed in her own actions...
