He believed that all things are bound together into one system, a cosmic unity, in which nothing can be understood by itself and everything is related to everything else.

He believed that the ultimate nature of this unity (universe) in rational, not physical. If we can understand it, especially if we can express our findings about it mathematically, then it must itself be rational, more akin to mind than matter.
