Extra Innings: When the Game is Done
It takes hold of the soul like no other. How does one explain it? I don’t know. On the night of our Regional Championship, baseball did just that to my team. This was a night where my team’s faith met with its determination. Determined not to lose, we took the field on June 8th, 2002 in Noblesville, Indiana ready and prepared to bring home a trophy our school hadn’t seen in 17 years. Determined not to lose, my fellow Southport Cardinals and I stared at the American flag before the game, dreaming of a goal we had been ardently working for for nine months: the State Finals. Determined not to lose, we lost. The Regional Championship game for my baseball team was one of a bittersweet outcome in that it was a game of passion, just as all baseball is, a game of turmoil and triumph, and a game that perhaps taught me some critical lessons despite the loss.
