Explain what a study of St. Mark’s Gospel can tell Christians about the nature of discipleship.

Mark’s Gospel shows several examples of discipleship. A disciple is a follower of Jesus; they came from all walks of life. Jesus called twelve disciples. Jesus chose these twelve to set an example for people to follow. Discipleship means being prepared to follow Jesus; this can involve suffering, rejection and death. The nature of discipleship is not one of a privileged position but is one of humble service towards others. In Mark’s Gospel we are shown a true disciple has a number of qualities that are shown in the tasks they carry out as a disciple.
Commitment is a key factor in the life of a disciple. It is important that they are able to commit themselves. Discipleship demands full commitment. The people who Jesus calls follow him and drop all there belongs and give up there life up to devote and commit themselves to being a follower. This is shown when Jesus calls the fishermen.
