In this essay I will write about how Mara matures and changes throughout the novel and how her personality is strengthened by her actions and beliefs. Mara Bells name is symbolic to some of the other characters in the book (such as the treenesters). Mara is important to all peoples in the novel. She is indeed the only factor common to all of the groups described in the novel.

In the opening few paragraphs Mara is revealed as a normal fifteen year old with a normal life. As a fifteen year old, Mara couldn’t handle the responsibility of saving the lives of her family and friends on the island of wing. Tain (a character in the novel) gave Mara all of the support she needed and it was him who was giving Mara hints about that it was not too late and that she should think up an idea that could save the people from the treacherous waters.
