The surrounding and actual events along with encounters Pip faces during this first visit to Satis house strongly influence his character and perspective on life. It's Pumblechook who first deals with Pip before his visit to Satis house. Like Mrs Joe he is neat, keeping everything in place. He does not wish to form any form of a bond with Pip, "I had been ... of my eyebrows," and just like Mrs Joe he is quite happy to treat Pip as though he is a lower being, the only, "conversation consisted nothing but arithmetic." He is not a hard worker and is constantly checking up on what everybody else is doing to make sure that he is the same as them. He shares similar values to Mrs Joe, "being possessed by my sister's idea that a mortifying and penitential character ought to be imparted to my diet," and like her he regards himself as a higher class citizen.
