gy Balance In A Compressor

1. Objective

To study the energy balance and obtain the performance characteristics of a centrifugal compressor.

2. Theory

Air compressors commonly used in today can be of that reciprocating, screw or centrifugal types. In this experiment, we will be using a centrifugal compressor.

In this type of compressor, the fluid is drawn into the centre of a rotating impeller and is thrown outwards by centrifugal action. As a result of the high speed of rotation, the fluid acquires a high kinetic energy. The pressure difference between the suction and delievery sides arises from the conversion of this kinetic energy into pressure energy. This pressure is progressively increased from stage to stage in the compressor. Detailed theory and calculations are shown in Appendix 1.

3. Equipment
