Evolution of a Gentleman

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, is about a working-class boy who, discontented by his seemingly meaningless station in life, goes on to achieve an opulent lifestyle. After he loses his wealth, he remarks to his steadfast companions of old, Biddy and Joe, “ ‘. . . receive my humble thanks for all you have done for me and all I have so ill repaid!’ ” What offenses has Pip committed to merit such a humble apology? Pride and a strangely founded love for a beautiful woman leads Pip down a dark path of snobbery, arrogance, and abandonment of ethics; in the end, though, his true chivalrous nature shines through, leading him to reconciliation with Estella, the love of his life; Abel Magwitch, his financial benefactor; and his family – Joe and Biddy.
