INTRODUCTION
There have recently been a number of government initiatives that have focused on the use of research and evidence in clinical practice (DoH 1989, DoH 1991, DoH 1997a, NHSE 1998)) which underline the principles in the UKCC Code of Professional Conduct Practice (1992) and Scope of Professional Practice (1992).
The author is not only aware of her personal professional responsibilities regarding the use of best practice and accountability, but is also responsible for standards of care delivery in the Mental Health Directorate Rehabilitation Service. In an attempt to drive practice forward the author is heading a project team to implement evidence-based practice in that area. The author has undertaken this review of the literature to explore the available information to assist in that project.
