EUROPEAN IMPERIALISM

In the nineteenth century, Britain and France could build vast empires while Germany and Italy could not because, Britain and France had already many motives encouraging them to expand while Germany and Italy had only recently unified and they did not have the same number of recourses as France and Britain. Imperialism, a result of nationalism, involved strong nations taking over weak nations. England and France could establish great empires because they had many incentives to take over the uncivilized areas of the world. These motivators included nationalism, trade opportunities, technology, and the spread of civilization. The only reason that Germany and Italy did not have the ability to take over weak states involved the fact that they only established themselves recently.
