EURO

On September 29th 2000 the Danish people voted not to adopt the Euro. 53.1% of the Danish people voted against joining the single currency and 46.9% in favour. The result disappointed many pro-Europe politicians and business leaders.
What about Britain - should we join the Euro? Feelings run high on both sides of the debate and below we look at some of the arguments.

Denmark vs. UK
Denmark is a much smaller country than the UK. The population of Denmark is 5 million whereas the UK population is 58 million. The Danish economy is worth $139.9bn and the UK economy is worth $1,324.4bn (OECD data for 1999 based on PPP rates) and so we are considerably larger than them. However, we are both part of Europe, so is there really any difference? The Danish Krone is currently pegged to the Euro whereas sterling floats freely against all currencies.
