Ethan Frome, written by Edith Wharton, is a tragic romance novel that takes place in the small and simple New England town of Starkfield. Ethan Frome, the main character of the story, faces many trials and hardships throughout his life in Starkfield. However, he has no way to escape these things because he is doomed to remain there forever. It all starts when his mother grows very ill and Ethan is forced to take care of her, and to look after the family farm. This is how Ethan meets Zeena Pierce; she was one of his mothers' nurses, and also a distant family member. After Ethan's mother passes away, he marries Zeena for lack of anything better to do, and with the hopes of fulfilling the emptiness in his life.
