The definition of a tragedy is “a serious play with an unhappy ending, especially one concerning the downfall of the main character.” In my opinion, Ethan Frome is one of the greatest tragedies in American Literature.
The main character is Ethan Frome, a man whose life choices are directed through accident. He has a promising future, but with the death of his mother, he is forced to stay in a rural New England town, on a bleak, isolated farm. This is our first sign of the tragedies to come. He marries hi...
