1. The books setting takes place in Egypt where all Israelites are slaves. Before the Israelites were slaves they were invited guests in Egypt. After several generations things changed in Egypt and the Egyptians started to fear the Israelites so they put masters over all the Israelites and built villages to keep them out and away from the Egyptians.

2. The main characters in the book are:
Jesse – he was a Hebrew slave and the son of Nathan and Devorah. Jesse worked in a metalcraft shop learning how to make ornaments.

Jennet – she was the beautiful ward of In-hop-tep. Jennet was half Egyptian and half Syrian which made her a higher ranking captive than Jesse. Jennet also worked in the metalcraft shop learning gold and silversmithing.
