Erie Canal and transportation today

July 4, 1817, the Canal construction began at Rome, NY. It was in 1798 when Niagara Canal Company incorporated to build a canal between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie and on July 12, 1807, a letter from Jesse Hawley to Erastus Granger a projection of Erie Canal.( http://www.history.rochester.edu/canal/chron.htm) The boats used on the canal evolved as well the canal itself. The Erie Canal, built across New York State, opened in 1825 introducing the Midwest to development and helped New York City become a worldwide trading center.
