Epilepsy

A brief history of the disease/parasite including what broad group it is classified into, statistics on its incidence in the modern world and its current status as a threat to human health.

Epilepsy is classified into the Neurological Diseases group. Its history goes back through to ancient times. Health professionals conducted the earliest population surveys of Epilepsy in India in 1964. Neurologists began studying Epilepsy in 1980. Worldwide it is estimated that there are over 50 million people that suffer with Epilepsy; 35 million of these people live in developing countries. In South-East Asia there is an incidence of Epilepsy of 2-10 per 1000 people. Epilepsy continues to be a threat to human health as its diagnosis goes on. The risk of Epilepsy in the average life span is 2-5%.
