Effects of Catalase

In this lab, the experimenter observed what happened when catalase was mixed with hydrogen peroxide. Also, the experimenter observed what happened when boiled catalase was mixed with hydrogen peroxide, and what hydrogen peroxide did when mixed with a macerated potato. Then using the science workshop, a pH sensor, a temperature sensor, and a pressure sensor, the uncatalyzed and the catalyzed rates of hydrogen peroxide decomposition were determined.
It was hypothesized that if catalase is mixed with hydrogen peroxide, then water and oxygen gas will be given off at a faster rate than normal decomposition. The data supported this hypothesis because as can be seen in part 1 of the data, bubbles of oxygen gas were given off. The reaction which took place was 2H2O2-->2H2O+O2. This is significant in biological systems because catalase in the body decomposes hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the body because it is toxic to cells.
