Edward Hopper

Edward Hopper frequently incorporated loneliness as a theme in his paintings. The painting, “Nighthawks” was published in 1942. A restaurant diner in New York City inspired it. “Drugstore” was an actual store also located in New York City, not far from the restaurant in “Nighthawks.”
The “Nighthawks” are assumed to be the three people sitting at the counter in the restaurant. The time setting is during the night. The only light given from the diner casts shadows on the other gloomy, vacant buildings. The mood is very sullen and empty. “Drugstore” embraces a similar...
