Educating Rita

The film 'Educating Rita' is all about changes. From the film we realise that change could be painful, that change may take a very long time or it may simply be just a change of a dress and that change is embraced by few with such positiveness and determination as confronted by Rita. 'Educating Rita' uses different film techniques to shape the meaning of change, techniques such as use of music, camera work and different metaphors such as the ‘barriers’. 'Educating Rita' can be related back to the poem 'The Door' (Miroslav Holub).

As the movie commences and the camera, after some time, focuses on Rita we see that 'Rita is a child of the welfare state'. Rita is naive, innocent and from the working class. She works as a hairdresser. Rita decides that she wanted a change in her life, that she wanted "to discover herself".
