Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Marks

"Man is not truly one, but truly two" said Dr. Jekyll in Robert Louis Stevenson’s famous book, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Ultimately, people have two or more sides to them and these sides are different from person to person. Stevenson describes the soul as a “battleground” between good and evil. Stevenson’s book parallels many characters in Alias Grace because most, if not all the characters have indeed two or more sides. The characters of the novel can be compared to flipping a coin; you never know which side will appear.

Duality is everywhere in Alias Grace from the huge houses, to the stylish structure of the novel. Yet duality mostly lies in the creative characters. The dualities in characters depicted in this novel are different from each character |and is what makes this novel mysterious, intriguing and exciting.|
