Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Through observing literature, it is obvious that a duality exists in the protagonist. Robert Louis Stevenson
illustrates the relationship between the good and evil archetypes in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Throughout this
novel, the reader becomes acquainted with the personality traits of Dr. Jekyll and observes him as a highly
educated and respected man. However, the reader is soon introduced to a dark, mysterious character, Mr. Hyde.
The reader is only provided with limited knowledge of Hyde, but he is clearly an image of evil. On the other hand,
Dr. Jekyll is the image of good. Although these characters represent an antithesis in character traits, Stevenson
reveals the essential bond that exists between them.
As depicted through the plot of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, good and evil represent the duality commonly
manifest through archetypes. Stevenson suggests that the elements of good and evil cannot exist separately.
