The author uses a lot of figurative language, e.g metaphors, which help create a powerful novel. The social context of the novel was that oit was written at a time when people appeared respectable but did whatever they wanted like go to brothels at night. Mr Hyde appears 'troglodytic', this proves that he is backwards, and has an animal-like nature. This is reinforced by other references in the story such as ' he gnashed hi s teeth...
