Downsizing isn't the only option

Downsizing, layoffs, and pink slips are used throughout companies both Internet based and those that are brick & mortar organizations. These events don't discriminate by industry or company.

Are these the only options available to companies? What if companies could find other ways to cut expenses yet retain their skilled workforces? Pipe dream or reality?

Companies feel they must use these methods because:

Only way to cut expenses
Be more competitive
Less $ coming in, means less $ available for salaries
There are problems with these solutions:

It is harder to maintain competitiveness when you have a reduced work force.
Customer service levels will drop and lead to customer dissatisfaction.
Employees' morale is lowered
