Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal disorder characterized the presence of an extra twenty one chromosomes. Instead of having 46 chromosomes in his or her cells, a person with down syndrome has 47 chromosomes. Down Syndrome occurs in approximately one out of every 800 to 1000 live births, being one of the most often observed chromosome anomalies. However the cause of these anomalies is unknown to this day.
Down syndrome is seen un 3 different types: trisomy 21, which is the most common, translocation and mosacism. A characteristic can also be found in the general population, but a baby with Down Syndrome is easily detected because of his low muscle tone.
