Douglas Haig

aig’s Background & Experience
Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig was born in Edinburgh in 1861. His father owned a whisky distilling company. Haig was educated at Clifton College, in Bristol. He acquired a degree at Brasenose College (Oxford), before going on to Sandhurst Royal Military College. He passed out of Sandhurst in under a year, joining the 7th (Queens Own) Hussars. He served there as a cavalry officer for the following nine years, chiefly in India. When Haig became major general, he was the youngest officer of that rank in the whole British Army.

Haig’s Attitude Towards His Men
It was Haig’s ability to shoulder responsibility for savage operations, heavy casualties, disappointments and to go on believing in working for ‘the cause’ that marks Douglas Haig out as a man of quite exceptional strength. Lloyd George's memoirs depicted him as treating soldiers' lives with disregard, while remaining far from battle himself.
