If Oedipus had allowed himself to be shaped by the situations surrounding him, and essentially listened to those who warned him not to pursue his quest for the truth, his fate may not have been so tragic. Against the plea of his wife to “forget” his line of argument, and her explicit cry that he will “never live to learn the truth. (p. 55)”, Oedipus was quick to dismiss Jocasta’s words of wisdom. He condemns them as the embarrassed remarks of a haughty and self-righteous Queen, and leaves her to “enjoy her pride of birth. (p. 55)”. As the dramatic irony heightens, we are left to wonder whether this is demonstrative of Oedipus’s honest character and his perpetua...
