Doll

It is inevitable that the characters will fail in some way to control what happens to them because struggle and failure are what create interest and drama in this play. It is a reflection of our everyday life, We are constantly constructing and deconstructing our inner and outer control over things as everything around us changes as a consequence of life’s rhythm. The characters of Isbens ‘A Dolls House’ all struggle to control their lives. Nora, Helmer, Mrs Linde, Rank and even Krogstad each had problems and concerns that they tried to manage yet in the end were out of their controls. Nora was Isbens doll. She was like the puppet to which he pulled the strings. No matter how hard she tried to control her life she failed. Isben introduced us to Nora as a silly, spendthrift, housewife who lived under the patronizing guard of her husband, who treated her like a ‘dolly-baby’.
