Do the Right Thing
Spike Lee’s 1989 film Do the Right Thing sparked a lot of controversy when it first came out to theaters. Some thought his depiction of urban communities to be stereotypical, many thought it would start problems within communities. Others thought the film to be an excellent piece of work. I agree I thought the film was excellent, it was comical, but also serious in dealing with many issues that still take place even today.
I think that Spike Lee’s portrayal of urban communities is a bit stereotypical, but I think he does this to prove a point. He wanted to show the audience what some people think a urban community looks like. As Hal Hinson of the Washington Post wrote “Despite the moral wobbliness, especially at the end, the film is not, as some of the advance press has suggested, an irresponsible, hysterical rant.
