DIVINE RIGHT OF KINGS


The storm broke during the reign of King Louis XVI. He was twenty years old when he came to the throne. No one could have been more out place than he was and he realized this and often wished he were just a common man. His greatest fault was that he was always ready to listen to others and follow their advise. When this advise was good, everything was fine. But later on in King Louis XVI’s reign the advise was bad and it cost the king his life.

When King Louis XVI first came to the throne, he trusted the management of the finances of the kingdom to Turgot, one of his best statesmen. AS long as the king followed his ministers advise, the state of the kingdom was improved, but he was often under the influence of the frivolous queen, Marie Antoinette. He was also persuaded by his selfish courtiers, who opposed any financial reforms. After a while they persuaded the King to dismiss his minister.
