Disney imperialism

Preface… some of this is corroborated by “the emperor’s old groove” but most of it is corroborated by nothing more than my own meandering experience

I did my presentation on what critics have come to term the Disney “renaissance” of the early 1990’s.

The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and The Lion King

I wanted to study these films because I wanted to be happy, because, like a lot of people won’t admit, I watched, enjoyed and devoured these animated musicals as a child.

But as I studied these films I did not feel the exuberance and bliss I felt when viewing them as a boy. The funny quirky characters as well as the limitless spectacle that can only be achieved through animation, took a backseat to the disturbing narrative and imperialist ideology in all these films.
