Disease

SARS is a potentially dangerous respiratory infection that recently appeared in East Asia and has spread to close contacts, household members, and health care workers. SARS does not appear to be highly contagious when protective measures are used, and 90 percent of those who've contracted the disease have recovered. However some individuals, often those with underlying heart or lung disease, may develop more serious disease. Among the cases reported so far in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Singapore and Canada, the death rate from this condition is 3-4%.

Symptoms usually show up within 3 to 7 days of exposure. According to the WHO, SARS are infectious but appears to be less than the flu. The illness usually begins with a fever (measured temperature greater than 100.4°F [>38.0°C]).
