Discrimination in pre 20th-century American culture
Discrimination has been and still is a major controversy in American society. Discrimination before the 20th century varies depending on era, because in different literature works, the characters had different meanings to the discrimination issue.
Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn expressed discrimination in a different way. Huck appeared to be a sort of racist type child, but throughout the story, the audience gets the impression that he’s not racist, but a matter of the environment and how he was raised. For example, the scene where Jim and Huck come across a wrecked steamboat, when asked by Aunt Sally if anyone had been hurt, Huck replies with “No’m. Killed a Nigger” (Twain, 1409).
