Differences or similarities in employment levels between Australia and New Zealand.

Firstly, it must be said that Australia’s population is approximately five times the size of New Zealand’s. After researching recent figures and statistics of employment levels between the two countries, it has come to my attention that despite such a large difference in population their employment levels work out to be quite similar.

For instance – The unemployment rate in NZ in the December 2002 quarter was 4.9 percent. Similarly, in Australia at this time the unemployment rate was 6.1 percent.
The Labour force participation rate for Australia was 64.1 percent and the labour force participation rate for NZ was 66.3 percent.
Also, in both countries over the last three years, the number of employed persons has gradually been increasing and the number of unemployed persons has also been gradually decreasing.
