Development of Pyramids

The Old Kingdom spanned five centuries of rule from the Third through to the Sixth Dynasty. According to Wilson, this went from 2700 – 2200 BC. During the Third Dynasty architecture and art boomed, and the Step Pyramid of Djoser, which was the world’s first building made from stone, was created. This Step Pyramid became the prototype for the pyramids that were erected at Giza in the Fourth Dynasty where Sneferu completed at least three pyramids. One of these was the first true pyramid. Also the Great Pyramid at Giza was completed, which is believed to have been constructed by Khufu. Dynasty Four lead to the worship of the sun god, Re in the Fifth Dynasty where sun temples were then created although pyramids were still constructed. The Sixth Dynasty marked the growing independence of the nobles, but declined rapidly.
