Describe the Range of Counselling Skills Used When Working with Client

There are varying skills used that enable clients to explore their thoughts and feelings. Using these skills adequately creates a relaxed atmosphere when working together with a client and makes the session work.
These skills are:

Listening
Questioning
Empathy
Paraphrasing
Reflecting
Summarising

Listening is an active not passive skill, which requires full attention. Those who are listened to start feeling accepted and start taking their words more seriously and discovering their true selves. (Nouwen 1996)
Besides being an important aspect of counselling, this active listening is also one of the best ways of letting clients know that you are with them. Both verbal and non verbal behaviour involves attending and understanding what clients are saying to you (and how they may be feeling and what mood they may be in.
