Describe some of the ways in which gender categories can be used to explain the formation of gender identities in young children.



Identity is what we are and what we aren’t. Identity is about how we see our selves and how others see us. Is something that makes you feel that you belong to a certain group of people. Is about being one thing and not another and yet being two things at the same time (people have multiple identities). So is about similarity and difference. Differences or similarities are marked by how we look, what we do, what we like and what we don’t. A question that we often set to our selves is ‘Who am I’? - Identity provides us with means that will help us to find out who we are, to find out what makes us the same with other people or what makes us different.
